Greener
Forgetting your life is filled with jusr as much love, even if there's less people.
“Never retire.” He says, grabbing his free sample from the counter.
“Wasn’t planning on it.” I think, but don’t say. He talks about how his grandkids have started cussing, and I let him talk. I learned a long time ago that old folk are often the same type of lonely as I am. He talks about his wife, and he lays out his tree. It is a lush and bountiful one. It is full of children and grandchildren and soon-to-be great grandchildren. He beams at every leaf.
It makes my branch feel sparse. It makes me question if my pruning has been overzealous or presumptuous, but I know my tree bares sour fruit. Maybe I could uproot and walk into the sunlight.
He says “Never retire, you’ll become the babysitter.” He says, with a performative groan. I’m watching my nephews after work. My mama is coming for a visit soon.

I love these little moments. Thank you for sharing them
